Contraception Sponge

This sponge was intended to protect the women of Ancient time from undesired pregnancy. After soaked in several substances such as resins, honey, salt brine and others, the small sponge was inserted into the vagina.

While the sponge itself provided a local barrier, the employed substances with warming or irritating effects entered the uterus, where they were believed to expel the semen.
