The first generation of hormone implants still consisted of six rods. These were placed under the skin of an upper arm for three years. Later, they were further developed to two rods.
The latest new development has been on the market since around 2001 and consists of only one rod. It is pain-free and invisible from the outside; however, it can be felt.
